Description

Ships under sail fill the center circle on the reverse of HK-346, the bronze official medal of the 1907 Jamestown Exposition, with "Landing of Expedition Under Captn John Smith" around and May 13. 1607. below. That date set the program for the anniversary itself: on May 13, 1907, European war fleets joined a great naval parade in Hampton Roads. The fair had been planned around an International Naval, Marine and Military Celebration, and President Roosevelt's proclamation of March 1905 limited foreign invitations to armies and navies, so the United States never named it a world's fair. The obverse bears Pocahontas facing left within the legend of the settlement's tercentenary, dated 1607--1907. Coined by the Mint at its own booth on the fairgrounds, the bronze is 34 mm; silver is HK-344 and gilt HK-347.
