Description
A Post Office building fills the reverse of HK-343a, with "Souvenir" curved above it, "Post Office" beneath a line under the building, and "San Francisco" around the bottom inside a beaded border. The obverse is the Cliff House die of HK-343, the second San Francisco earthquake type. The medal is gilt brass with a reeded edge and measures 36 mm. It carries no reference to the disaster on its face, yet Hibler and Kappen catalogue it with the earthquake and fire souvenirs of 1906 because it shares the Cliff House die. The fire after the April 18 shocks burned for three days across hundreds of city blocks. Like the other medals in this group, it has no known maker, and the HK entry doubts that it was anything more than a commercial souvenir.
