Description
HK-343 is the Type II San Francisco earthquake souvenir, and instead of ruins it pictures the Cliff House, labeled above, with "San Francisco" beneath. The reverse is all lettering inside an open wreath: "Souvenir / San Francisco / Earthquake / & Fire / San Francisco, California." The medal carries no date. It is brass with a reeded edge, 36 mm, the same size as the Type I pieces. Hibler and Kappen pair it with HK-343a, which keeps the Cliff House obverse but swaps in a Post Office reverse. As with the Type I medals, research has not found who made these pieces or whether any of the money went toward the city's recovery, and the HK account regards them as private commercial souvenirs of the April 1906 earthquake and the fire that followed it.
