Description
Aluminum is the fourth of five metals listed for the Type I San Francisco earthquake souvenir, after silver (HK-340), silver-plate (HK-340a) and brass (HK-341) and ahead of bronze (HK-342a). HK-342 carries the same pair of ruins as its sisters: California Street in wreckage on the obverse, dated April 18, 1906, and the broken City Hall on the reverse inside the legend naming the earthquake and fire, all within beaded borders. The listing gives 36 mm for the group. The San Francisco Public Library, asked about such medals, reported the reliable local view that they were probably a passing commercial enterprise with no official link. In the city the losses were put at a quarter of a billion dollars, with fires raging for three days.
