Description
The United States Mint building in San Francisco was saved from the 1906 fire, where the flames were fiercest, by 250 employees and soldiers, a welcome piece of good news in the account Hibler and Kappen give of the disaster. This page is the brass Type I souvenir, HK-341, of the earthquake and fire of April 18, 1906. Its two scenes are of destruction: on one side a street of shattered buildings marked "California Street," and on the other the gutted City Hall with "Souvenir" beneath. Nobody has established who struck these medals. A suggestion that they raised money for relief is set aside in the HK entry, since the sums would have been negligible. The brass piece measures 36 mm; silver (HK-340) and aluminum (HK-342) versions share its dies.
