Description

Lieutenant Zebulon Montgomery Pike sighted the peak that bears his name on November 15, 1806, during his Southwest Expedition, and Colorado Springs marked the centennial in 1906 with a medal authorized by the 59th Congress. The design is C. E. Barber's, and the Philadelphia Mint produced it in four finishes; HK-337 is the gold-plate version, listed by Hibler and Kappen as gold (gold-plate). Pike's bust, turned partly right, fills the obverse with "Zebulon Montgomery Pike. 1779-1813" around it. The reverse places the mountain in a central circle over the words "Pike's Peak," with "Southwest Expedition Commemorative Medal" around and "Colorado 1806-1906" below. Pike rose to adjutant and inspector general and was killed in 1813 in the assault on York, now Toronto. Its sister finishes are proof silver (HK-335), oxidized silver (HK-336) and bronze (HK-338), all 34 mm.
