Description
The 1905 Proof Philippine Half Centavo is a proof bronze half-centavo coin struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1905 for the Philippine Islands under United States administration. Half centavos came only from the Philadelphia Mint. Melecio Figueroa's obverse shows a young man seated beside an anvil with a hammer, the volcano Mount Mayon smoking behind him, the value above and FILIPINAS below; the reverse has an eagle standing on the shield of the United States inside the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the date at the bottom. The coin found little use in trade, and none were made for circulation after 1904: the 1905, 1906 and 1908 pieces exist only as proofs from the yearly sets. Proofs were struck at the Philadelphia Mint for the Philippine proof sets sold from 1903 to 1908. The Red Book and the Krause catalogue record 471 pieces. Catalogue numbers: KM-162. PCGS number 90021.
