Description

Washington State put up its own building at the Lewis and Clark fair in Portland in 1905, and HK-334 adapts the Government Building medal to show it: the reverse names the "Washington State Building" above the edifice in place of the federal caption, with Portland, Oregon, below. The obverse is the undated one used for HK-333, joined busts of Lewis and Clark with a crossed rifle, oar and telescope. HK-334 is brass with a reeded edge, 38 mm, and Hibler and Kappen list it in that metal only. Fourteen states joined the exposition by act of their legislatures, and the fair drew official participation from sixteen nations, with many Federal exhibits including a Mint display. Its grounds lay beside Guild's Lake at Willamette Heights, in the northwest of the city.
