Description

HK-325 is the silver official souvenir medal of the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland, Oregon, open from June 1 to October 14, 1905, a century after the expedition reached the Pacific. The obverse scene, titled "Sighting the Pacific 1805," shows a woman walking between two men toward the ocean and a setting sun; the reverse maps the coast from British Columbia to San Francisco with trade routes running out across the Pacific, ringed by "Westward the course of empire takes its way." Like the other official pieces, they came off a press in the Mint's display at the fair. Farran Zerbe, who ran the fair's coin display and sold its gold dollars, described the issue as one type in two metals and three finishes. A gold-plated bronze version is HK-326. This piece is silver, 34 mm.
