Description

The Palace of Machinery appears on the obverse of HK-320, an aluminum Exhibition Palace dollar from the 1904 St. Louis fair, its size given as 525 by 1000 feet and its cost as 497,000 dollars. The reverse is given to mining and metallurgy, a palace that measured 750 by 525 feet and, the die says, cost half a million dollars. Both views stand under "Worlds Fair St. Louis" within beaded borders, and the edge is reeded. The Mines and Metallurgy die was used again with a Palace of Textiles reverse on HK-322d. A brass version of this pairing is HK-320a. Machinery and mining halls suited a fair that put the motor car and other new technology in the spotlight. Aluminum, 36 mm.
