Description

Chas. Gregory & Co., long-time members of the New York Stock Exchange, privately issued this medal for the opening of the Exchange's new building on April 23, 1903. Charles Gregory and his partner William T. Callaway were numismatists themselves and meant it as a small tribute that would keep the building's memory alive. R. Laubenheimer & Co. of New York designed and struck it, and the name R. Laubenheimer appears in microscopic letters on the right base of the edifice that fills the obverse under "New York Stock Exchange," with 1792-1903 below. The reverse is the firm's card: its name, its membership, the two partners and the address 30 Broad St. HK-297 is the silver proof, 38 mm, Rulau Nyk 59; there were also strikings in gold (HK-297a) and bronze (HK-298).
