Description
The New York Stock Exchange building opened on April 23, 1903, replacing the Exchange's first building of its own, occupied in December 1865 on part of the same site and torn down in 1901 to make room for a larger one costing more than five million dollars. The brokers had organized formally in 1817 as the New York Stock & Exchange Board. HK-298 is the bronze version of the medal Chas. Gregory & Co. had made for the opening by R. Laubenheimer & Co.: the new building on the obverse with the dates 1792-1903, and on the reverse the firm's name, the partners Chas. Gregory and Wm T. Callaway, and 30 Broad St., in lines of varying size with light scrollwork. Charles Gregory gave the dies to the American Numismatic Society on April 17, 1914. Bronze, 38 mm.
