Description

Wells Fargo & Company gave this silver medal to its employees on or about March 18, 1902, the fiftieth anniversary of the firm, presenting one to everyone who had been in its service for a year or longer. A larger celebration had been planned and was called off after the death of company president John J. Valentine, who had pressed for it. The obverse has a stagecoach above a ribbon with the company name and a Pony Express rider below. The reverse groups a ship, a factory, a train, quill pens and keys around an upright clenched hand giving off rays, with "1852 March 18th 1902" on a ribbon, "Express and Banking" below and "Fidelity" at the bottom. Neither designer nor maker has been identified. The gold striking, HK-296a, was presented to messenger Charles Charles. HK-296, the silver version at 40 mm, came in a maroon leatherette case lined in blue velvet and satin.
