Description

Charleston's exposition was first suggested in October 1899, and its company was chartered in June 1900 and sold stock to the public, with modest grants from the city and state. Congress at first refused to contribute, though it later paid to move federal exhibits down from the 1901 fair at Buffalo and settled some claims after closing. Those exhibits, including the Mint exhibit, came to Charleston at local expense at first. HK-294a is the silver version of the design with a winged woman on a globe on its obverse and a corn stalk beside the fair's name and dates, 1901-1902, on its reverse. The brass piece is HK-294, and white metal and nickel follow as HK-295 and HK-295a. Silver, 35 mm.
