About This Coin
Privately minted by Joseph Lesher, a silver miner and civic booster in Victor, Colorado, the 1900 Lesher Dollars are octagonal silver pieces that represent one of the most audacious private coinage ventures in American monetary history. Lesher produced these distinctive eight-sided medals — each containing approximately one ounce of silver — as a form of local currency intended to circulate among the merchants and miners of the Cripple Creek mining district during a period when conventional currency was scarce in Colorado's remote mountain communities. Each 1900 Lesher Dollar was individually numbered and bore the legend "JOSIE LESHER'S REFERENDUM SOUVENIR" along with the silver content declaration, creating a quasi-monetary instrument backed by the intrinsic value of its precious metal content rather than government authority. Local merchants who agreed to accept the pieces at face value had their names and businesses stamped onto individual coins, creating merchant-specific varieties that are cataloged and collected as distinct types within the Lesher Dollar series. The 1900 issues represent the inaugural year of production, predating the slightly modified 1901 pieces, and include varieties featuring different merchant endorsements that provide a commercial directory of turn-of-the-century Victor, Colorado. Surviving examples in any condition are scarce, as the original production was small and the silver content ensured that many pieces were eventually melted when their bullion value exceeded their novelty value. The Lesher Dollar series holds a unique position in American numismatics as a documented private monetary experiment that functioned within a real commercial economy, and major specimens routinely achieve five-figure prices at auction, particularly merchant-stamped varieties where few examples of a specific business endorsement survive.
