Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1899 Liberty Head Nickel exhibits a remarkable triple repunching of the date reading 1899/18/1. Repunching of the 1 and 8 is visible west of the primary digits, with an additional repunching showing a 1 south of its primary position. Triple-punched dates are scarce across all denominations, making WRPD-001 a noteworthy find in the Liberty Head Nickel series (1883-1913). Cross-referenced as Flynn RPD-004. Obverse die markers include a light north-south die scratch through the left side of the lower right star. On the reverse, a plus-shaped die scratch sits inside the C of CENTS, accompanied by northwest-southeast die scratches through the first A and M in AMERICA. The Liberty Head Nickel series used hand-punched dates throughout its production run, and the 1899 date saw a healthy mintage of over 26 million pieces at Philadelphia. The westward displacement of the first punching and the southward shift of the initial 1 suggest two separate unsuccessful attempts before the die sinker achieved the correct positioning, creating a layered effect visible under moderate magnification. NW/SE die scratches through the first A and M in AMERICA.Submitted By: John RobertsCross References: None known Obverse: None noted.
