Description
The 1898 (S) Liberty Head Double Eagle is a Gold Double Eagle minted at the San Francisco Mint, within the Liberty Head Double Eagles 1849-1907 series. The U.S. Mint produced 2.6 million examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 94% of production. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM surrounded by a glory of rays. Spanish-American War year. Double eagles funded war expenditures and international trade. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Estimated market value ranges from $4.9K to $5.3K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 33.4 grams, 34 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge.
