Description
Gold, round and 13 mm across, HK-838 belongs to the Pinch series of small Alaska souvenir pieces made for the M. E. Hart Co. of 560 Powell Street, San Francisco, which sold them. This one is dated 1897 and shows an Indian head in a feathered headdress turned to the right above the date, ringed by sixteen evenly spaced five-pointed stars. The other side carries a large "One" with "Alaska Gold" over it and "Pinch" under it, inside a wreath left open at the top. Round pieces of the series have reeded edges and beaded borders and normally weigh 23 1/2 grains, though thinner pieces of 12 grains were also made. The 1897 round companion with the head turned left and thirteen stars is HK-838a.
