Description

Hibler and Kappen single out HK-865c by its thickness: a white metal planchet of more than 4 mm, matched by the copper HK-865a, which is also over 4 mm thick and 39 mm across. Planchets like these were central to Thomas K. DeLorey's argument that the Continental-related medals once given to Thomas L. Elder were made by Professor Montroville W. Dickeson, whose 1876 pieces used similar blanks. This pairing, DeLorey Dickeson 6, puts the eagle grasping a heron, with the motto "Exitus in Dubio Est," opposite the reverse dated May 10th, 1775, which records three million dollars as the whole amount of Continental currency issued. The eagle vignette comes from the three-dollar bills of 1775-1777. The November 29th pairing is listed separately in white metal (HK-865) and copper (HK-865b).
