Description

The second Grant's Tomb medal of 1897 turns Grant's bust to the left and calls him "General U. S. Grant," with a spray of leaves below the front of the bust and the tiny signature of R. Sneider of New York beneath the left shoulder. Instead of a picture of the building, the reverse is all lettering: Grant's own phrase "Let Us Have Peace" at top, then a dedication line with his name on a leafy ribbon, followed by "Monument New York April 27th 1897." That date is the day President William McKinley dedicated the tomb on Riverside Drive, a project begun in 1891 and paid for by public subscription. In 1958 the National Park Service took over care of the site from the city. Hibler and Kappen consider both Grant's Tomb types likely official issues. HK-279 is struck in white metal at 38 mm, a little larger than the Type I medal, and HK-279a is the bronze version.
