Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
James J. Corbett, the reigning heavyweight champion, is the man on HK-276, the Type I or Corbett dollar of the Carson City, Nevada, title fight of March 17, 1897. His bust faces right above the name "Jas. J. Corbett," with six stars along the left border and seven along the right, inside a beaded edge. The reverse treats the bout as a world championship: an open wreath tied with a ribbon encloses the words for the title, the place "Carson City / Nev." and the date, with "Souvenir" above and "Corbett-Fitzsimmons Contest" below. Corbett lost that day, knocked out in the fourteenth round by Bob Fitzsimmons, who weighed in at 167 pounds. The matching Type II piece showing the winner is HK-277, from the same reverse die. Brass, 33 mm.
