1897 So-Called Dollar HK-1009, Bickford Dollar
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
HK-1009 joins two of Dana Bickford's dies that otherwise appear apart: the Grant's Tomb obverse of HK-836, with Grant's bust in the tomb under 13 stars and "Commemorated Apr. 27, 1897," and the eight-link reverse first used on HK-833. That reverse gives the dollar in sterling, francs, kronen, gulden, marks, guilders, roubles and yen, with "Invented and Protected by Dana Bickford" inside the links. Like HK-1008 it is silver with gold center, a precious-metal pairing it shares only with HK-1008 in the set of eight patterns Bickford put out in 1897, all of them 28 mm. Bickford had been proposing an international coinage since his return from European travel in the 1870s, when Mint Director Henry R. Linderman ordered a pattern eagle from his design in four metals, aluminum among them.
