Description
The 1896 (O) Barber Half Dollar, struck at the New Orleans Mint, is part of the Barber Half Dollars 1892-1915 collection. With a mintage of 924,000, this is a scarce issue — the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 31% of total production. The obverse features Liberty facing right wearing a Phrygian cap topped by a laurel wreath, with the word LIBERTY on a headband and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1896-S and 1896-O are semi-key dates with limited branch mint production. Coined at the New Orleans Mint, which served the nation's southern economy from 1838 to 1909 and produced coins prized for their regional character.
