Description
Seven mining tools lie across the reverse of HK-734, with "Butte Montana 1896" above them and the label "Miners Tools" below. The obverse pictures the buildings at the Anaconda Mine, named above, with "Butte" beneath. Hibler and Kappen call this the first type of their Anaconda Mine pieces; it is copper, 38 mm, and Rulau lists it as But 2. A second type, HK-734a, also copper, shows the lower works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. and the Montana Hotel instead. The listing gives no maker or sponsor for this first type and no account of why it was issued, so the medal's own lettering, a Butte mine and its tools in 1896, is the record.
