1893 So-Called Dollar HK-244, D.C. U.S. Capitol Centennial
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
President Washington laid the foundation stone of the United States Capitol, with Masonic ceremonies, on September 18, 1793, and this white metal medal marks the hundredth anniversary of that day. HK-244 shows the Capitol with "Washington, D.C." on a ribbon at the top and the words of the occasion arranged around the building, "Corner" at its left and "Stone" at its right, ending "of U. S. Capitol / Sep. 18, 1893" below. The reverse is simply "Souvenir" in a wreath between two scrolls, ringed by stars inside a beaded border. Hibler and Kappen found no record of who made it; with no Mint records, they think it was struck privately and probably sold as a souvenir in and around Washington. HK-244 is 35 mm.
