Description

Boldenweck & Co. of Chicago struck this design and received two design patents on October 7, 1890, D20,196 for the obverse and D20,195 for the reverse. Hibler and Kappen suggest Rudolph Laubenheimer may have designed it, and reject Eglit's attribution to Robert Lovett, who had died more than ten years before. The obverse is crowded: the signing of the Declaration fills the upper half under "Signing of Declaration of Independence July 4th 1776," a ribbon reading "World's Columbian Exposition" crosses the middle with 1892 and 1893 beneath it, and the lower half has a spread eagle on a shield between busts of Columbus and Washington, with "Chicago" at the bottom. The reverse pairs Columbus coming ashore in October 1492 with the Pilgrims landing in December 1620, the latter scene signed R. L. HK-156 is silver with a reeded edge, 40 mm, Eglit 36; HK-157 is the white metal version.
