Description

A dime from the San Francisco Mint, the 1890 (S) Seated Liberty Dime belongs to the Seated Liberty Dimes 1837-1891 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 1,423,076 dimes dated 1890. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays a cereal wreath enclosing ONE DIME; the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is on the obverse, in place of the stars. Struck during the Gilded Age of rapid industrialization and the great silver debates, when monetary policy shaped elections and economic destiny. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 2.5 grams, 17.9 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4705.
