Description

This 1890 Indian Head Cent displays a pre-cud die crack spanning from the 7:30 to 9:00 position on the reverse, tracing an arc through the wreath area. A pre-cud represents the intermediate stage of die failure between a simple rim crack and a full retained or broken cud — the die has fractured along the rim but the fragment has not yet displaced or separated. Every coin struck from this die before the fragment broke away carries this progressive crack as a frozen record of impending failure. Struck in bronze (95% copper, 5% tin and zinc) at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin belongs to James B. Longacre's Indian Head series that ran from 1859 to 1909. The broad arc from 7:30 to 9:00 covers roughly 45 degrees of the reverse circumference, cutting through the oak and laurel wreath that frames ONE CENT. Die cracks of this length indicate significant stress accumulation, likely from extended use under the heavy striking pressure required for proper detail transfer. Pre-cuds document the life cycle of a failing die and are collected both as error types and as die state markers within variety attribution.
