Description

Produced at the San Francisco Mint, the 1889 (S) Seated Liberty Dime is part of the Seated Liberty Dimes 1837-1891 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 972,678 dimes dated 1889. The obverse features Liberty seated on a rock, holding a pole surmounted by a Phrygian liberty cap in her left hand and a shield inscribed LIBERTY in her right and the reverse displays a cereal wreath enclosing ONE DIME; the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is on the obverse, in place of the stars. Struck during the Gilded Age of rapid industrialization and the great silver debates, when monetary policy shaped elections and economic destiny. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 2.5 grams, 17.9 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4703.
