Description

Roger Williams's landing at Providence on June 24, 1636 is the subject of the obverse, shown as a scene on a raised shield with "What Cheer" lettered at its top; "Landing of Roger Williams" runs above the shield and the 1636 date below. The reverse records the anniversary itself: inside a central wreath, "Held June 23 24 25 1886," and around it "250th Anniversary of the Settlement of Providence, R. I." Both sides have beaded borders. Hibler and Kappen list the medal in bronze as HK-605 at 38 mm and in white metal as HK-606, this piece. They name no maker and give no account of the three-day celebration beyond the dates on the medal, so its two faces hold the story: the founding scene of 1636 on one, and on the other the June days of 1886 when the city marked two and a half centuries. White metal, 38 mm.
