Description
May 20 appears twice on HK-598, once for each side's subject. The obverse shows Charlotte's firemen's monument, flanked by "May 20" and "1884," inside the legend "Unveiling Firemen's Monument Charlotte N.C." The reverse goes back to May 20, 1775, the date of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence named around its border; in a counter-sunk central circle a wasp nest hangs from a branch with 12 wasps beneath it. The choice of day ties the unveiling to the county's older claim of an early declaration of independence. Hibler and Kappen list the medal only in white metal, 35 mm, and give no maker, sponsor or account of the ceremony, so the piece itself is the record of the occasion in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1884.
