Description
The 1884 Proof Gold Dollar Pattern - J-1733 is a proof gold dollar pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Design Reform Patterns (1880-1942) series. It was struck from the regular 1884 gold dollar dies. It belongs to a copper set of 1884 pieces, covering the quarter through the double eagle and the trade dollar, that was given to Jacob Smith, who wrote the Mint's visitor guides as A. M. Smith; Bolender offered the set for sale in February 1936. The single known example has a pedigree back to that set. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com lists it as unique. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1944. Cataloged as PCGS #62163.
