Description
Struck in silver from the dies of the white metal HK-595, HK-595b commemorates the hundred and fiftieth anniversary in 1883 of the founding of the Georgia colony, which reached statehood on January 2, 1788. Its reverse is the more unusual side: the Georgia state seal is set in a countersunk center finished to a proof-like mirror, ringed by the words "Sesqui-Centennial of the Settlement of Georgia" and, at the foot, the paired years 1733 and 1883. The obverse portrays the colony's founder at full length, seated and turned to the left, with his name, "Gen. James Oglethorpe," around him. Both sides have beaded borders. The silver piece measures 35 mm; a bronze version is HK-595a.
