Description
The Albany Burgesses Corps marked fifty years with this medal, its reverse giving the two dates, October 8, 1833, and October 8, 1883, divided by scrolls. The corps seems to have been formed in 1833 as a quasi-military company in elaborate uniforms; it turned out for civic ceremonies, escorted visiting dignitaries and marched regularly in Albany's parades, and it is no longer active. Its name borrowed an older term: a burgess was a freeman of a borough, and in colonial Virginia the word named delegates to the House of Burgesses. The obverse shows the Albany city seal in a central circle, with "Semi-Centennial" above and the corps' name below. "Semper" and "Paratus," Latin for always prepared, frame the reverse, and a microscopic incuse Tiffany & Co. signature sits at the bottom. HK-593a is silver-plated bronze, 41 mm; the plain bronze is HK-593.
