Description
A further variant in the "With CENTS" correction series, J-1719 presents the modified reverse with the CENTS scroll on a nickel planchet but with die characteristics that distinguish it from J-1717. The differences between J-1717 and J-1719 may involve the specific arrangement of the CENTS scroll relative to the Roman numeral V, variations in the wreath configuration, or differences in the obverse die used for this striking. The Mint's preparation of multiple die pairings for the corrected design indicates that Barber explored several approaches to integrating the CENTS inscription into the existing reverse layout, seeking the most aesthetically balanced solution that would clearly communicate the denomination without disrupting the overall design harmony. The wreath on these late-series patterns differs in detail from the adopted production reverse, with variations in leaf arrangement and berry placement that document the fine-tuning process. J-1719, struck in nickel with a plain edge, represents one of the design options evaluated before the final "With CENTS" production dies were approved for mass coinage.
