Description
The 1883 Proof Nickel Pattern - J-1719 is a proof five-cent pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Design Reform Patterns (1880-1942) series. It has CENTS written across the V on the reverse; USPatterns.com connects the design to people gold-plating the first 1883 nickels, which lacked the word, and passing them as half eagles. About half a dozen are known in aluminum. It is struck in aluminum with a plain edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-7. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1924, Adams-Woodin 1683 and Taxay EP1267. Cataloged as PCGS #62136.
