RCD-5C-1882-02R Retained Cud

Description

Serving as the companion piece to RCD-5c-1882-01, this retained cud documents the second of two retained cud errors present on the same physical 1882 Shield Nickel — a remarkable dual-error coin where both retained cuds coexist. The "02R" suffix designates this as the second retained cud on the reverse die. A retained cud forms when a die fragment breaks away but stays lodged in position, continuing to strike coins with a raised irregular area that retains partial design detail. Finding two retained cuds on a single coin is exceptionally uncommon, as it requires two separate rim-area fractures on the same die, with both fragments remaining trapped rather than falling free. Shield Nickels, produced from 1866 through 1883, were struck at Philadelphia exclusively, and the 1882 issue had a mintage of 11.476 million pieces. The Shield Nickel series preceded the Liberty Head design and features the union shield on the obverse — a Civil War-era symbol of national unity. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins.
