Description

HK-125c is the silver striking of George Hampden Lovett's 1881 medal for the centennial of the Battle of Groton Heights, 40 mm, alongside the white metal HK-125 and the bronze HK-125b. Its reverse is laid out almost like a map: the outline of Fort Griswold fills the center, enclosing the words "Massacre in Fort Griswold," a small arrow beside it points north, and below come the burning of New London and the date, September 6, 1781. Around the border runs the centennial date, Sep. 6. 1881, with the name of the battle. The obverse dramatizes the defense, a soldier reloading behind the fort wall and a kneeling Indian firing over it, with a defiant pledge not to give up the fort whatever the consequences. No maker other than Lovett is named for the piece.
