Description
Part of the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series, the 1881 (O) Liberty Head Eagle is a Gold Eagle from the New Orleans Mint. The New Orleans Mint struck 8,350 eagles dated 1881. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll above the eagle. Eagles served a growing economy during the early Gilded Age. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8693.
