Description
The copper companion to J-1651, rendering the modified Barber Liberty obverse and goloid metric reverse in copper with a reeded edge. By the time these 1880 patterns were struck, the copper versions of goloid metric dollars had become the most accessible examples of the series for the small but devoted community of pattern collectors. John W. Haseltine, the Philadelphia coin dealer who served as a principal conduit for Mint-produced patterns reaching the numismatic market, cataloged these pieces alongside their goloid and aluminum siblings in his famous Type Table sales. The copper's receptive surface captured every nuance of Barber's modified Liberty portrait, making these strikings particularly useful for studying the fine die work that distinguished each obverse variant. Notable for its rich, fully red surfaces when well preserved, this pattern demonstrates the high striking standards maintained at the Philadelphia Mint even for experimental coinage.
Rarity Notes
R-6 to R-7. Approximately 10-18 examples are believed extant. Copper is typically the most available composition in each goloid metric dollar group.
