Description
The first of three 1880 metric dollar patterns bearing George T. Morgan's Liberty head obverse, paired with a reverse displaying metric weight specifications in a design distinct from the goloid metric reverse used on J-1645 through J-1647. Morgan's obverse features his characteristic Liberty portrait — a mature classical face framed by flowing hair gathered at the back, the same general concept he had developed for the Morgan silver dollar that entered production in 1878, though rendered here with modifications specific to the pattern series. The reverse expresses the coin's weight and fineness in metric units within an ornate wreath, with DEO EST GLORIA above and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA / ONE DOLLAR around the periphery. Struck in the goloid alloy, this pattern represents the parallel track of the metric dollar program: where J-1645 used William Barber's coronet Liberty, this piece employed Morgan's competing portrait, giving Mint Director Horatio Burchard two distinct artistic visions to evaluate for any future metric coinage.
Rarity Notes
R-7. Estimated 4-10 specimens known. Morgan-obverse goloid metric patterns from 1880 are exceptionally scarce.
