Description

Part of the Liberty Head Eagles 1838-1907 series, the 1880 (CC) Liberty Head Eagle is a Gold Eagle from the Carson City Mint. The Carson City Mint struck 11,190 eagles dated 1880. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll above the eagle. Strong post-Resumption production at Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, and San Francisco. Carson City's Nevada mint, active from 1870 to 1893, produced coins from Comstock Lode metal. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 16.72 grams, 27 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #8688.
