Description

Pewter is the fourth metal of the 1879 Battle of Newtown medal and gets its own number, HK-124, after the bronze, proof silver and brass strikings HK-123 to HK-123b; all are 40 mm. The fight it remembers took place near Newtown, New York, on August 29, 1779, when an American force under General Sullivan defeated warriors of the Six Nations under Joseph Brant, joined by British regulars and Tories. The reverse sets out that account in a long wreathed inscription and ends by tying the victory to the young republic's survival as an independent nation. The obverse is quieter: a tower and grounds between 1779 and 1879, and a commemorative legend with the date of the battle. These centennial medals were often struck to raise money for the celebration they marked.
