Description

A tower standing on its grounds, flanked by 1779 and 1879, takes the center of the obverse of HK-123b, the brass striking of the Battle of Newtown centennial medal, 40 mm. The legend around names the battle at Newtown, New York, and the date beneath, August 29, 1779, is the day of the fight. On the reverse a wreath runs around the border, and inside it a long inscription in lines credits Major General John Sullivan of New Hampshire with defeating the Six Nations, led by Joseph Brant and supported by British troops and Tories, and so helping to assure American independence. Hibler and Kappen list the medal in four metals: bronze (HK-123), proof silver (HK-123a), this brass, and pewter (HK-124). Like many anniversary medals of the period, it carries no maker's name.
