Description
The 1879 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle represents a San Francisco Mint issue from the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 43,500 quarter eagles dated 1879. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons. Resumption of specie payments made gold coins legal tender for all transactions again. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7831.
