Description
The 1879 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series. With a mintage of 43,500, this is a scarce issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. Resumption of specie payments made gold coins legal tender for all transactions again. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $5.9K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7831.
