Description
This silver medal, cataloged as J-AM-38, was produced in 1878 for the Charitable Mechanic Association of Massachusetts, one of the oldest charitable and educational organizations in New England. Founded in 1795 by Paul Revere and other Boston artisans, the Association promoted education, technological advancement, and mutual aid among working people. The silver composition indicates this was a premium award medal, presented to outstanding exhibitors at the Association's triennial exhibitions showcasing the finest American craftsmanship. The J-AM-38 Julian catalog number places this within the American Medal series. Paul Revere's involvement in the founding connects this medal to the Revolutionary heritage of American artisanship, and the 1878 date places it during the height of America's Gilded Age industrial expansion when the mechanic arts were transforming daily life. The Association continued its charitable and educational mission well into the twentieth century, maintaining the traditions Revere and his fellow craftsmen established.
