Description
Part of the Liberty Head Quarter Eagles 1840-1907 series, the 1878 (S) Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a Gold Quarter Eagle from the San Francisco Mint. With a mintage of 178,000, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY and the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with shield on breast, olive branch and arrows in talons, with a banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM. The Bland-Allison Act shifted monetary focus to silver, but gold production continued. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $948 to $2.2K depending on grade and condition. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 4.18 grams, 18 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #7829.
