Description
The 1878 Proof Quarter Eagle Pattern - J-1567 is a proof quarter eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. George T. Morgan's quarter eagle design was struck on a thinner, wider planchet than the regular coin, 20.5 mm against 18 mm. About a dozen are believed to exist in copper, several of them gilt; the design was copied onto a half eagle (J-1568). NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1757, Adams-Woodin 1558 and Taxay EP1108. Cataloged as PCGS #61929.
