Description
The 1878 Proof Eagle Pattern - J-1580 is a proof eagle pattern struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Metric & Stella Patterns (1874-1879) series. This is William Barber's capped Liberty design of 1878 at regular size, made as both a half eagle and an eagle. A Mint record of February 19, 1878 found by Roger Burdette records that two half eagles and two eagles of Barber's design were struck in gold for the Director's office. About a dozen are known in copper, on both thick and thin planchets, several gilt, five of them in museums. NGC's census also lists gilt examples of this Judd number. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge. USPatterns.com rates it R-6. It is also catalogued as Pollock-1773, Adams-Woodin 1546 and Taxay EP1123. Cataloged as PCGS #61944.
