This 1878 Indian Head Cent displays a pre-cud die crack on the reverse spanning from approximately 3:00 to 5:00 on the clock face, covering the lower-right quadrant of the reverse design. A pre-cud represents the intermediate failure stage where a die crack has propagated to the rim but the fractured die metal remains attached, producing a raised line on struck coins that previews the eventual cud break should the die continue in service.
