Description
This bronzed copper medal, cataloged as J-CM-48, commemorates the Centennial of the Valley Forge encampment of 1777-1778, one of the defining episodes of the American Revolution. General Washington's Continental Army endured a brutal winter at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, suffering from cold, hunger, and disease before emerging as a disciplined fighting force transformed by Baron von Steuben's training program. The bronzed copper finish indicates a darkened patina applied to the copper medal to enhance its aesthetic qualities — bronzing gave copper medals a more formal, aged appearance valued by collectors. The 1878 centennial was commemorated with ceremonies at Valley Forge and the production of this medal documented in the Julian catalog. Valley Forge holds an almost sacred place in American memory as a symbol of endurance, sacrifice, and the determination that won independence. The centennial medal connected Americans of the Gilded Age to the suffering and resilience of Washington's troops during the Revolution's darkest winter.
